You are considering a career in the Health Science industry one day but uncertain which course to study. Let us dive in and understand the Health Science field.
What is Health Science?
Health Science is a large group of disciplines using the application of engineering, mathematics, science, and technology to deliver health care to humans and animals. This field focuses on the study, research, understanding, and the applications of how humans and animals function to improve their health.Â
Not only that, Health Science emphasizes health care, health promotion, disease prevention, and improving the lives of their patients. Â
What are the disciplines in Health Science?
Health Science comprises a wide variety of disciplines and you can choose which one would you like to venture in for your education. Examples of the disciplines in Health Science are:
This is the study of health care practice to diagnose, treat, and prevent sickness and injury in someone’s life. Usually, students study medicine before their pursuit to become a medical practitioner such as a nurse, doctor, or even surgeon.
This area focuses on human oral health in which dentists will examine, diagnose and treat patients’ oral conditions. Not only that, dentists specializing in this area are allowed to perform surgery to improve the oral conditions of a patient.
Science of behavior and mental processes in which mental health is diagnosed and treated such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), depression or even Schizophrenia. Psychologists or psychiatrists will help the patients to improve their mental health by prescribing medications, psychotherapy, or other suitable methods.

Focuses on human wellbeing and helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists usually can help with asthma, back pain and in preparing for childbirth.
This is a field where diseases are being studied and researched to find the treatment. Usually, students will learn more about human anatomy, microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry to understand the diseases and thus, be able to find the cure.
8. Medical Imaging
This is a technique and process of creating visual representations of the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention. Examples of imaging are X-ray radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound.
This examines the interaction between the environment and human health. It focuses on the natural & built environments for the benefits of society. It will examine areas such as the quality of air, water and nutritious food.
