Why study Interior Design?
Interior design is all about the combination of art and science in improving a building’s interior, creating a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for individuals who experience the room. It affects the way how people live, work, play and even heal by creating comfortable homes, functional workplaces, and beautiful public spaces. Interior Designer is considered as a professional that required in building and design sectors.
Being an interior designer is not a simple task as he or she needs to possess the knowledge and skill to manage textiles, materials, colour, space planning, sustainability, safety, health, and building codes in order to achieve a balance from all elements. As the field of design keeps on changing, interior designers will need to adapt to software applications for 2D & 3D. The people who work with an interior designers are often to be contractors, architects, engineers, craftsmen, furniture, dealers, and business and homeowners.
The employment rate for interior designer shows significant grow since 2014 due to the 8.7% growth in the building sector in Malaysia that directly provide opportunities to foster the growth of interior designers and decorators in the nation. Although there are surrounding rumors about the salary of an interior designer is often less than expected, well, it depends.
What skills do you need to become an Interior Designer?
A Strong Sense in Arts
Understanding the basics of color wheel could be beneficial for both your studies and future career, you would easily understand the core concepts and logic behind all designs and arrangements. Different types of colour influence our emotions in different ways, for most people, blue colour represents as sky (Freedom), green colour represents as nature (Relax), and etc.
Communication skills
As an interior designer, you will need to understand the needs and wants of your client, it is not only about your perspective on the design, you will also need to understand clearly from the point of view of your client. Forming a basic draft and matching it with customer’s expectations. Plus, designers will eventually work with other professionals, you will need to communicate well and adapt to different workstyle in order to deliver the best service to customers.
Able to adapt to New Technology
Making good use of technology not only helps interior designers stay organized, but is becoming an industry standard. Learning AutoCAD—NYIAD has a course for that too—and other interior design programs help professionals lay out their vision clearly. They also allow for adjustments down the line and for easy sharing with architects, contractors, and other professionals collaborating on projects.
