What is Australian Matriculation?

What is the Australian Matriculation? What are the main Australian Matriculation programmes available in Malaysia? You may learn more about these programmes and some recommended universities in Malaysia on this page.

The Australian Matriculation Programme will be a wise decision for you if you recently passed your SPM or IGCSE exam and intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree abroad or even at a private university in Malaysia. Australian matriculation includes two types: the South Australian Matriculation (SACE), formerly known as the SAM, and the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT), also known as the Western Australian Certification of Education (WACE).

What is SACE?

Formerly known as South Australian Matriculation (SAM), the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is an accredited pre-university programme that is equivalent to the Year 12 high school course in Australia. The coursework makes up 70% of a SACE student’s grade, while the test makes up just 30%. Your accreditation from completing this pre-university programme will be accepted not just in the best local universities, but also abroad!

What is AUSMAT?

AUSMAT is a well-structured and balanced pre-university programme with an emphasis on coursework and external examinations. The coursework makes up 50%, while the test makes up 50% as well. This pre-university programme is designed to be flexible in choosing different subjects from different fields to help prepare students to pursue their preferred field of study and gain entry into top universities of their choice locally or abroad. Upon completion of this programme, successful students will be awarded the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), which is recognised worldwide and is ideal if you are planning to further your studies locally or abroad.

Why take SACE or AUSMAT?

SACE and AUSMAT are at the same level of qualification as other pre-university programmes such as STPM and A-Level; they are based on the Australian education system and are equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification.

The following reasons might help you gain a better understanding of Australian Matriculation and why you should consider taking it in Malaysia:

Offer high flexibility

Both SACE and AUSMAT require students to choose five subjects. The students will have the flexibility to take subjects they’re most interested in; they can be purely science- or art-related subjects, or even a combination of both. It offers great flexibility for students who want to try out different subjects at the same time without going too in-depth. SACE and AUSMAT are great programmes to help build a strong foundation in your chosen subject.

Leave your options open

One of the benefits of taking pre-university courses is that it doesn’t restrict you to continuing your study for specific degrees at specific universities. It is suitable for students who are still unsure of what degree they want to pursue. Unlike foundation programmes, SACE and AUSMAT leave your options open to pursue a broad range of degrees after completing the programme.

Recognised by different countries overseas

SACE and AUSMAT are not only accepted in Australia, for students who would like to further their studies in other countries such as the UK, USA, New Zealand, Singapore, and Canada, SACE and AUSMAT are also internationally recognised. Of course, students can also choose to continue their studies at any private university in Malaysia if they want.

Balanced between exam and assessment

SACE and AUSMAT will be good options for you if you don’t like exams. Some students do not like the idea of an A-Level because of its 100% exam-based system. In SACE and AUSMAT, your coursework performance, including quizzes, tests, and assignments, will be taken into account, so you can master your learning materials and coursework to improve your grades.

Shorter duration

Depending on whatever intake you plan to enrol in, SACE and AUSMAT can provide you, compared to other pre-university programmes like A-Levels, a quicker pathway to continue studying for a degree abroad.
