Do you smile, laugh, and cry while watching films such as Avengers, Wonder Woman and the Harry Potter movies series? Are you curious why these films managed to capture the heart of many? Not only that, you also have the passion to make films one day and are passionate to see your masterpiece in the cinema or you want to be a great YouTuber that produces inspiring video content?
If you answer all yes, you can start your journey by studying filmmaking.
In this article we will cover the stages of filmmaking, the entry requirements and recommended universities to study this course in Malaysia.
What is Film Making?
Filmmaking is the process of producing a film. It is about producing a story that makes a long-lasting impact that touches and captures the heart of audiences. There are 5 stages to create a film and these stages are not limited to only making film but it can also be used in making videos such as TV shows, Youtube videos and even wedding videos.
1. Development
The stage is where a screenplay is written while the financial budget is discussed and obtained. This is also when the script and storyboard are being produced.
2. Pre-production
Production crew that are highly experienced will be gathered, actors and actresses will be cast and the location of shooting will be scouted. This is very important to make sure that the shooting days will run smoothly so no pending or overshooting will happen to avoid over budget.
3. Production
This is D-Day. All the crews and the cast will come together for the shooting. This can go for months and years depending on the budget of the film. The raw footage will be collected and stored for post-production. The crew and cast will listen attentively to the film director to ensure the outcome of the film.
4. Post-production
The images, sound and necessary visual effects will be edited. The editors must understand the film directors’ mindset in order to edit the raw footage according to the script and the idea of the directors.
5. Distribution
The film will be advertised in social media, screened in cinemas or distributed to platforms such as Netflix and HBO.
Necessary Skills to be in Filmmaking Industry
Communication Skills
You need to have a very good communication skill because you will be working with actors and actresses, the production crew and everyone who is involved in and outside the film set. This is crucial to ensure the exact order is being delivered to avoid any miscommunication which may result in a film failure.
Creative
Your creativity juice must be flowing all the time. With so many films and movies created, your film must not be the same with others or you will have problems with copyright issues. Not only that, usually during the filming day, there are so many rising challenges that need to be overcome such as weather forecast, the tardiness of crews or sometimes the absence of actors. It depends on your creativity to overcome these problems to avoid delays in filming.
Technological Expert
As we are in Industrial 4.0, more advanced technology is being produced every year to create high definition films. You must constantly update yourself with new camera gears that will be used in the production. You must have high technological knowledge in every area such as camera, lighting, framing, and sounds.
Decisive
Problems will arise during production and post-production. You must be decisive to solve the problems. An example of a problem is one file of raw footage is corrupted and you are required to make a decision whether or not to continue editing or reshoot that particular scene. If editing is continued without the scene, you must change the whole script but if you choose to reshoot, you must allocate a new budget for that. Whatever the decision is, the outcome must be the best for that film.
