What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

There is much buzz around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in almost every sector and industry possible. The notion of AI has actually been around for decades but has now been popularised owing to how today’s AI systems are capable of demonstrating traits of human intelligence, including learning, problem-solving, perception, and even a limited spectrum of creativity, and social intelligence. The popularisation of AI could arguably be owed to the infamous ChatGPT and OpenAI as well.

One of the earliest definitions found for AI is that it is a field of science and engineering centering on making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programmes. While having the aim of utilising computers to comprehend human intelligence is similar, artificial intelligence (AI) is not limited to techniques that may be observed through biological methods.

Additionally, Artificial Intelligence could be understood as a field, which combines computer science and robust datasets, to enable problem-solving. AI encompasses sub-fields of machine learning and deep learning. These disciplines are comprised of AI algorithms which seek to create expert systems making predictions or classifications based on input data and large datasets.

If you’re looking for a simple explanation of what AI is, here is what I could gather –  Artificial Intelligence is like a smart machine that can learn things just like people do.

Benefits of AI

The benefits of AI are endless, especially when it is properly and ethically regulated for usage regardless of whether it is for personal, day-to-day, corporate, or industry use.

  • Automated Productivity

Artificial Intelligence allows for automated productivity where a wide range of tasks can be computerised. For instance, many of the Human Resource departments in companies and businesses utilise AI in their recruitment process when assessing through large stacks of resumes, and even when scheduling interview sessions. With this advantage, the process becomes more eased ensuring employees can focus on other tasks which are more complex and require strategising or decision making.

  • Entertainment

A major and current advancement seen in Artificial Intelligence is Generative AI or GenAI. This development is seen through programmes such as Midjourney and Imagen, where prompts can generate images, AI Chats including character AI, where you can converse with fictional characters or imitation partners, as well as other synthetic media such as Audio and Visual Deepfake. If you’ve seen that video of Taylor Swift speaking in Mandarin or that one episode from Black Mirror titled ‘Joan is Awful’, chances are you’ve been exposed to the usage of deepfakes.

  • Enhanced Lifestyle

Artificial Intelligence has also seeped into our everyday lives through Smart Homes, AI-based virtual assistance such as Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Cortana, when we interact with our smartphones and devices. Not only that, some applications including Grab, implements AI Helpdesk Chatbot in their App to ease customer service. The progress seen with AI in this aspect enhances our lifestyles, through optimising infrastructures and communication which saves time, money, and energy.

  • Inventive Innovations

As Artificial Intelligence permeates into our lives and various different industry sectors, many inventive innovations start blooming as a way of revolutionising lives, productivity, and work. One example of this are Driverless Cars such as Tesla’s Autopilot system where there is a combination of sensors, cameras, and Artificial Intelligence, enabling the car to travel between destinations without full human involvement. Another is the use of AI medical image analysis in the medical field where AI is being used to identify abnormalities in images such as MRIs, X-rays, and CT scans.

  • Perform Repetitive Work

Artificial Intelligence is capable of performing repetitive tasks and work which has the tendency to become menial and monotonous the more it is done. AI can help with mailing thank you notes, checking errors in documents, data entry, data collection, among other things. This perk would facilitate productivity often in the workplace by permitting focus on other tasks which demand more thought and human abilities.
