There are a number of excellent universities to study in Australia that you can trust will provide you with the education and environment you need. However, how do you differentiate one from the other? What trusted source could you rely on to help you make the right decision? Choosing a university is after all a huge decision to make, and you want to be sure that whichever institution you end up joining, you will be given the proper tools and knowledge to equip you for your desired career path.

This is where the Times Higher Education Ranking system (or THE for short) comes in handy. If you have yet to know of this system, do read on! In this article, we will be covering what THE is and which are the top Australian universities according to their system.

What is the Times Higher Education Ranking?

A British publication called Times Higher Education (THE) publishes an annual data rating of universities for potential students to learn more about the calibre and accreditation of the institution. THE has helped students make educated judgements on where they could receive the greatest education, academic atmosphere, and financial aid through data collection and consulting at more than 1,600 colleges in 99 countries.

THE evaluates each university as follows:

1. Teaching

This area looks at how efficient and competent the staff and university classes are. Data for this is gathered through surveys discussing reputation, staff-to-student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratios, and many more.

2. Research

Through the academic reputation survey, research is assessed to see how well-regarded it is by the university. This looks into whether or not the research conducted by the institution is relevant to the world.

3. Citation

Do research authors from this university get cited, and if they do, how often? This measurement is meant to look at the impact of the university’s published works on the outside world.

4. International outlook

For international students looking to study abroad, this measurement conducted by THE indicates the institution’s proportion of international students and staff, as well as their international collaboration.

5. Industry income

Though industry income only amounts to 2.5% of the score, it is not to be overlooked. It represents the impact produced by the university and its research beyond the academic knowledge. This shows how much funding the university receives from various industries in exchange for its research, further representing how well it attracts this type of attention from companies.
