What is Law?

Law is a system of rules that are created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior. The existence of law is important because it serves as a guideline in determining what behavior is accepted in society. Without it, there will be conflicts and clashes between social groups and communities. 

Being a lawyer is about representing clients or government agencies in criminal, civil litigation and other legal proceedings, draw up legal documents, or manage or advise clients on legal transactions. Lawyers are not limited to a single area, there are many existing practices and specialties that cover other niche areas of law.

Skills of a Lawyer

Logical Thinker

In court, you need to think rationally and reason consistent with facts and evidence to come to a conclusion. Thinking logically is about thinking in steps that involved gathering information, arranging them, and draw the final conclusion. As they said, emotion will cloud your judgement, therefore, you will also need to control your emotions despite stressful and dire situations.

Oral Communication

Language is one of the most fundamental tools of a legal professional. Sharpen up and master the language, a lawyer would need to communicate well in order to deliver a persuasive message without any misconceptions. Furthermore, a lawyer who possessed a keen listening skills are beneficial.

Research Skill

Being a lawyer is not an easy task, it involved countless research and study as preparation before presenting it in the court. Thus, a lawyer will need to research about legal concepts, case law, judicial opinions, statutes regulations, and information. They also must know the ability to review and assimilate large volumes of complex information efficiently and effectively.

Types of Law

Law can be divided into public law and private law. Depends on which area of law you are interested in, there is a wide range of law that are available for you.

A public law is about dealing with issues that affect the general public or states.

General Qualifications

In order to enter into Law courses, you will generally need:

  • SPM/O-Level: Minimum of 5Cs, including Bahasa Malaysia and a B+ in English; or
  • Other equivalent qualification
Diploma in Law (3-Years)
  • SPM/O-Level: Minimum of 3Cs; or
  • Other equivalent qualification
Degree in Law (3-Years)
  • STPM: Minimum of 2Cs; or
  • A-Level: Minimum of 2Es; or
  • Austalian Matriculation: Minimum of ATAR 50; or
  • Foundation in Law, Arts or Science: Minimum CGPA of 2.00; or
  • Diploma: Minimum CGPA of 2.00; or
  • UEC: Minimum of 5Bs
You would also need to meet these requirements:
  • SPM/O-level: Minimum of 5Cs, including Bahasa Malaysia, and
  • MUET Band 4 or IELTS Band 6.0

CLP Malaysia Requirements

In some cases, if the Bachelor of Laws does not include the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP), you will need to undertake the professional law exam to qualify as a lawyer in Malaysia. The profession law exam is conducted by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia.

In order to qualify for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) exam, you need to meet the requirements listed below:

  • A recognized 3-year Law Degree: Pass in 6 subjects and graduated within 6 years of initial registration with the university

    • SPM: Minimum of 5Cs, and
  • Recognized 3-Years Degree, and
  • STPM: Minimum of 2Cs; or
  • A-Level: Minimum of 2Es; or
  • UEC: Minimum of 2Bs; or
  • Foundation in Law, Arts or Science: Pass with CGPA 2.00
