The latest Australia annual wage review has been released in July 2018 and international students get to enjoy a 3.5% increase in wages! You might not know this, but international students usually pay 3 times more than what a domestic student pay while studying in an Australian University. Aside from tuition fees, the living cost of studying abroad is also a factor when one is considering going abroad for further studies. That is why Australia seems to be an ideal destination to pursue education.
How many hours can international student work in Australia
Australia offers international students the opportunity to work up to 20 hours a week and over 40 hours a week during the holiday period. Many international students choose to take up jobs to cover part of their living cost while studying in Australia. The tuition fees you pay varies from AUD$6000 per-year to AUD$40,000 per-year. This really depends on what you study, and which provider is delivering the education.
Australian National Minimum Wage Policy 2018
On the 1st of June 2018, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) had announced the latest national minimum wage policy which is set at $ 18.93 per hour for part-time workers and $23.66 for casual employment. Compared this to previous year, the wage has increased by 3.5%. We would advise all international students to check from time-to-time of the latest minimum wage while completing their studies in Australia.
Remember to pay your income tax
Assuming if you are studying and working in Australia, you will get to make at least AUD$378.60 per-week. This amount would be sufficient to cover most accommodation cost and you would have some balance to buy your meals. It is also important to find out more on how much tax you will need to pay each year. The Australian financial system starts from 1st of July each year and ends on the 30th of June the following year. If you have made more than AUD$18,200 in a year, get ready to pay some taxes!
Lastly, if you are being employed in Australia but not getting a fair salary (e.g. you are being underpaid by your dodgy boss) the best thing you can do is the right thing and the right thing would be to report this case to the Fair Work Ombudsman. Business operators can receive a huge fine for short-changing workers.
