Have you ever thought about what life looks like without the existence of an undercover superhero called ‘Teacher’? Teachers are the unsung heroes that many did not realise or take it for granted. However, without the presence of teachers, it is impossible to pass exams and even succeed in life. They are the people that molded and  impacted you throughout your journey in primary school and in high school. And there is always that one teacher that stays in our heart and mind as our favourite teacher.

Mrs. Bodey was more than a teacher but she was an educator and she played an important role in his younger life and now John Legend is a renowned song-writer. So, if you desire to become a teacher that will educate and shape the future generation, let us see the qualities that you must have. Let’s go!

What are the Qualities to Become a Teacher?

1. Patience

Each student will have their own unique learning style and capability. Some students have difficulty in mathematics, some language and some arts. A teacher must not portray their frustration towards the students while teaching. Therefore, you must be patient in teaching them and overcome their struggle.

2. Empathy

Children and teenagers have big feelings and often deal with more than we know outside the classroom. A teacher must be able to empathize with the students’ feelings. It is very crucial to understand and validate their emotions in order for them to become emotionally mature. You must be able to put yourself in a student’s shoes and help them feel understood. During teaching, you must be sensitive and thoughtful to ensure students feel safe.

3. Good communication skills

Teachers must have strong communication skills to ensure the needs of their students are met. Every student is different therefore, teachers must have excellent skills in talking, listening and conveying the knowledge to them. Apart from that, teachers need to communicate with other teachers and parents to ensure a successful learning among students.

4. Knowledgeable

Teachers must be fully equipped with the subjects that they are teaching. This is because students are very curious and inquisitive. Therefore, teachers must be able to answer all sorts of related questions to ensure students get the full knowledge and pass in their examinations.

5. Bring fun into classroom

Many students associate school with boredom. Therefore, teachers must bring fun into the classroom to instill excitement and anticipation among the students so they look forward to each session. Teachers must not only use traditional textbooks but incorporate modern technology such as Youtube videos, games and slideshows during teaching.

Types of Teachers

There are 3 types of teachers: Early Childhood Teacher, Primary School teacher and Secondary School teacher. These teachers are teaching in 3 different levels thus, the tasks that they carry also vary according to the level of students.

If you like children then the suitable role for you are either Early Childhood Teacher or Primary School Teacher. But if you prefer to deal with teenagers then you can choose to teach in High School. Bear in mind, your education will determine which students you are allowed to teach. Therefore, it is important to make the right decision on your education. Now let us check the education pathway to become a teacher in Australia.

What is the Education Pathway to Become a Teacher in Australia?

For those who want to become a teacher but took a different undergraduate degree and do not have the Bachelor of Education, can further their study in Master of Teaching.

Bear in mind, Master of Education is not the same with Master of Teaching.
