What is Automotive Engineering?
Automotive Engineering, along with aerospace engineering and marine engineering, is a branch of vehicle engineering, incorporating elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering as applied to the design, manufacture and operation of motorcycles, automobiles and trucks and their respective engineering subsystems. It also includes modification of vehicles. Manufacturing domain deals with the creation and assembling the whole parts of automobiles is also included in it. The automotive engineering field is research -intensive and requires direct application of mathematical models and formulas. The study of automotive engineering is to design, develop, fabricate, and testing vehicles or vehicle components from the concept stage to development stage. concept, development, and manufacturing are the three major functions in this field.
Study route for Automotive Engineer
If you cannot meet the standard entry requirements to study Bachelor of Engineering (Automotive) upon completion of your high school, you may be eligible to apply using the non-school leaver entry pathway. Flexible entry programs such as Certificate II, III & IV and diploma are available to meet the needs of other students.

Plan B – Enrolled into 2+2 study arrangement
- 2 years Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Malaysian University, (eg. Asia Pacific University – APU) and
- 2 years Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in Australia.
The course fees to study Bachelor of Engineering in APU is around USD$7,000+ per year, which is a great saving then to study the full 4 years stream in Australia.
Plan C – start from the beginning
However, if you cannot meet the standard entry requirements to study Bachelor of Engineering in Australia, you may be eligible to apply using the non-school leaver entry pathway. Flexible entry programs such as Certificate II, III & IV and diploma are available to meet the needs of other students.
- Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (82 weeks + 6 weeks holiday) A$15,400
- Certificate IV in Automotive Electrical Technology (30 weeks + 6 weeks holiday) A$4,500
- Diploma of Automotive Technology (33 weeks + 6 weeks holiday) A$9,900

Migration Opportunity for Automotive Engineer in Australia
Graduates of Automotive courses are able to apply for Temporary Graduate visa, depending on qualifications, for eighteen (18) months to two (2) years. An opportunity to gain relevant local work experiences which may be countered towards Permanent Residency. There is high demand for Automotive graduates can be seen in the occupations listed consistently in SEEK and Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). A sample of which are Automotive Electrician, Motor Mechanic (General), Diesel Motor Mechanic, Motorcycle Mechanic and Small Engine Mechanic.
