The SPM results will be out soon in just a couple of weeks.
If your result turns out to be unsatisfying (let’s hope not), it’s okay to let yourself drown in emotions for a while. But when it’s time to get back up, wipe your tears, hold your head up, and take a look at some of the options that you can consider if you have poor SPM results.
If you score 3/less credits in SPM.
#1 Diploma
A diploma is one of a pre-university program that offers a direct pathway to getting a degree. Most diploma in Malaysia requires only a minimum of 3 credits, compared to other pre-university like foundation program that requires a minimum of 5 credits. Upon the completion of the diploma, you can directly enter the second year of your bachelor’s degree.
Track to a degree: Diploma -> 2nd year Bachelor

#2 Vocational education and training (VET)
There’s always hope for everyone! Even if you score only 0-2 credits and pass BM&Sejarah, vocational education training (VET) can be one of your options to pursue your degree. Vocational training is a program that prepares students with the skills and knowledge needed for entering the world of work. Upon the completion of VET, you will receive a certificate that can be applied for a diploma degree.
Berjaya University offers a TVET (Technical and vocational education and training) on Berjaya TVET College. It offers various areas, such as Pastry Production, Web Development, Digital Marketing, and many more.
Track to a degree: VET -> Diploma -> 2nd year Bachelor

#3 Get a certificate
A certificate program acts as a bridge for students to a diploma degree at the same institute. It’s a 16-18 month program. Here are some of the certificate program in Malaysia:
- APIIT
– Certificate in Administrative Skills
– Certificate in Information & Communication Technology
After you got your certificate, you are able to pursue your diploma in either APU/APIIT.
- IACT
– Certificate in Communication Studies
After you got your certificate, you are able to pursue your diploma in IACT college.

If you failed the SPM
There are 2 types of failing SPM:
Fail in certain subjects asked by a university
Every university has its own requirements regarding its programs/courses. Certain study area requires more subjects than others. For instance, the course Pharmacy usually requires students to not only got credit in both BM and Sejarah, but also an additional credit in Science/Math. And if you did not meet even one of the requirements, they cannot accept your SPM scores.
So one of the moves that we can recommend is to choose another university/course that suits the scores that you got. There are surely plenty of universities/courses out there that have different requirements.
Fail BM/Sejarah
Sadly, there is no direct alternative for those who fail either Bahasa Melayu (BM) or Sejarah. Since 2014, you must pass Sejarah and get a minimum of credit in BM. Here we provide some alternatives if you fail BM/Sejarah:
1. Retake the subjects
With a one year gap, you can allow yourself to prepare more and study harder to be able to ace the test next year. It also allows you to learn from your previous mistakes. The gap year also helps you to give yourself a break before directly dive into the university world.
2. Work
If you don’t feel like pursuing higher education, working can be one of the alternatives. There are plenty of jobs that can suit your skills. If you’re more of a creative person, you can work as a graphic designer freelancer or video editor.
On the other hand, if you’re more of a business-mind person, you can work as a salesperson, customer service, or maybe create your own business!
