As mentioned in our last article, it is estimated that construction is the third fastest growing industry in Australia. Hence, in this article, we will explain the industry with more detail, architecture as an undergraduate course, and which universities in Australia carry the best architecture courses.

The Industry

The revenue of the architectural service industry has seen stable growth over the last five years or so. The economy rise in Australia has rendered a demand increase from residential, commercial and industrial construction markets, thus encouraging business growth and revenue growth. All in all, the industry is projected to increase at 1.6% annually for the next five years, to roughly AUD $6.1 billion. However, there are also concerns for the rising competition in the market.

As a result, studying a bachelors in architecture could be very beneficial to a student’s future, as it equips them with the necessary skills to enter a rapidly growing industry.

What will You Study?

Architecture students primarily work with hands on projects, rather than reading and writing. Even so, learning approaches may differ between universities, so it is crucial to research the modules thoroughly in order to select a course that suits your interests. A lot of architecture is not only taught in the classroom, but by going on field trips to study buildings, there are even programmes to travel a year abroad as an addition to an already stunning curriculum.

Key modules of bachelor degrees in architecture include structural engineering, architectural history, principles of environmental design and building material studies. Degrees teach aspiring architects to master practical skills such as how to accurately draw 3D designs, to abstract concepts such as design theory.

And finally, of course you would dedicate a majority of your time doing studio-based design project. You would pick up on primary skills such as digital illustration and architecture modelling.
