Common Misconceptions About Marketing

Sharing is caring :)

What are your first thoughts when you hear the word “marketing”? Perhaps it may be a seller, property agent, insurance agent and so on. You may also hear that a marketing degree isn’t required if you want to work in the industry, and that even non-graduates can be successful marketers, but is this true?

Marketing is an exciting course with exciting career opportunities, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood majors. In this article, we will debunk some of the most common misconceptions about marketing

#1 Marketing is easy and can be done by everyone

Most people believe that marketing is a simple process. They believe that simply running an ad and posting updates on social media is enough for a marketing strategy. It’s not actually the case, it’s far from the truth.

In fact, marketing takes a lot of time and dedication if you want to see your efforts pay off. Quality is more important than quantity in marketing. Thoughtful marketing produces results every time, without fail. You may save money and time by not marketing, but your audience will be significantly smaller.

#2 Marketing is basically doing the sales

You may have heard or read that marketers are simply salespeople. Yes, we have to generate revenue through sales, donations, or investments, and the ultimate goal of marketing is to convert prospects into customers. However, not all marketing involves a direct selling approach.

In fact, there is a more psychological aspect to marketing, as marketers delve deep into the minds of potential customers to discover what they truly desire. Many marketing firms and departments aim to inform and inspire their target audiences, frequently through engaging content such as blogs, articles, videos, and interactive features. Content that is useful and relevant helps to raise brand awareness and convert curious consumers into loyal customers.

#3 Marketing is for creative people

You may have heard that studying or doing marketing is only suitable for creative people. Of course, creatives with visual design or writing skills can find work in marketing, but you don’t have to have a penchant for visual branding concepts or snappy copy to succeed. If your skills are more quantitative and analytical than creative, you could make an excellent market research analyst.

This job entails researching the numbers behind trends, consumer behavior, and market conditions. Technical skills are also useful in marketing careers centered on search engine optimization (SEO), where analyzing data and working with code are important day-to-day responsibilities. Research and analysis are critical components of any company’s marketing strategy, especially as consumers increasingly rely on technology for product research and purchases. As big data initiatives expand, so will the demand for market research analysts.

#4 Marketing doesn't require hard skills

Most people believe that they can be successful marketers without having to learn marketing. They also believe that learning marketing is purely theoretical. Yes, books provide theoretical knowledge, but to advance in today’s ecosystem, hands-on learning is required.

A good marketing certification will usually teach you more about the practical aspects of marketing and hands-on work experience, which are well-known by most employers. Aside from that, the accreditation demonstrates a student’s enthusiasm and willingness to continue developing their skills in an ever-changing marketplace, and it can be viewed as a useful addition to a marketing degree that focuses on marketing principles, history, and theory in general. Not to mention, taking certificate courses and training is a great way to stay up to date on the latest technologies and frameworks.
